East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders

Mission

To support and develop global networks of experts working on issues related to the mission of the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation - Kazakhstan through boosting international cooperation among civil society participants aimed at exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience.

 

Objectives

1.         Support of local initiatives of Kazakhstani NGOs and other civil society participants for the following purposes:

  • development and improvement of expertise;
  • exchange of experience obtained in the course of social transformations;
  • cooperation in application of innovative solutions of similar problems;
  • creation and strengthening of international coalitions designed to protect rights and interests of social groups within the frames of a long-term development of global networks of experts; 

2.         Financial support of national programs implemented by the Soros Foundation -Kazakhstan (Public Finance Transparency, Legal Reform, Youth and Media Support).

 

Areas of Activities

The Program is designed to help civil society representatives by inspiring them to work without borders and use international experience in promoting new ideas. In 2009, the following projects were implemented:

  • Facilitation of Eastern European and Asian countries' involvement in human rights protection and patient safety
  • Study of advanced practices in social welfare for the disabled
  • Study of advanced experience in palliative care
  • The project "A Proactive Student: Poland-Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan"
  • Prevention of child sexual abuse and helping children who fell victim to sexual abuse: strengthening of trans-regional cooperation
  • Joint activities addressing issues of aged people in Central Asia and Caucuses
  • Expansion and improvement of EITI program in Eurasian region

 

 Priorities in 2010

The East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders program favors long-term initiatives that set the goal and have real potential to create and develop international networks of experts designed to achieve positive changes by:

  • supporting socially vulnerable social groups;
  • promoting cultural, ethnic, and social diversity;
  • facilitating citizens' access to information;
  • involving society in civil dialogs.
