February 3, 2012 - Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan welcomes the adoption of the Law “On Amnesty Dedicated to the Twentieth Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and the subsequent decision by the city court number 2 of Ust-Kamenogorsk to release Yevgeny Zhovtis. The expected release of the prominent human rights activist will become a long-awaited event for the civil society in Kazakhstan as well as for the international community.

For the last several months she has struggled with cancer with much courage, working until the very end. We admire the strength of her spirit and dedication to the ideals of open society. Anna had an acute sense of justice, empathy and belief in our ability to change the world for the better. Her passion and incredible diligence always filled us with energy and enthusiasm.

OSCE Centre promotes transparency in extractive industries

ALMATY, 1 August 2011. From August 1, the Youth and Media Support Program has been divided into two separate programs: Media Support and Youth Initiatives. SFK’s Board of Trustees made the decision following an assessment of the pilot Youth Initiatives component of the program.

Statement on prison reforms in Kazakhstan

The Open Society Justice Initiative and the Soros Foundation - Kazakhstan express grave concern over the recent announcement by the government of Kazakhstan that it will return oversight of its detention facilities to the Ministry of Interior. The decision, which was made without any public discussion, raises serious questions about the government’s stated commitment to curtailing systematic abuse and the widespread use of torture in Kazakh prisons.

SFK is disappointed by the recent decision of the Parole Commission on Zhovtis's case

Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan (SFK) expresses its deepest disappointment with the recent decision of the Parole Commission for the Penal Institution ОВ156/13 that has declined Yevgeniy’s Zhovtis’s application for an early release. Prior to the above review, SFK along with the 77 other organizations sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan calling upon him to release Yevgeniy Zhovtis.

International human rights organizations call again upon the Government of Kazakhstan to release human rights defender Evgeniy Zhovtis

On July 19, the administration of the colony–settlement where Zhovtis is serving his sentence will review his application for parole to decide on his conditional release. We express our hope that the commission will ensure a fair and thorough examination of the issue and, make full use of this opportunity to release Zhovtis.
