Unacknowledged and Unprotected: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Kazakhstan

This first ever report on human rights situation of sexual minorities in our country. It can be broken down into two parts: 1) review of the legal status of LGBT people under international and national law of Kazakhstan and 2) sociological research on discrimination of LGBT people in Kazakhstan.

Report shows that although national legislation of Kazakhstan prohibits discrimination it still does not include mechanisms to protect human rights of this discriminated population group.    Research manifests dramatic and disturbing facts of homophobic and transphobic attitude of the society towards people with other sexual orientation. Reposts contains recommendations to the Government, international organizations and Kazakh NGOs on solving problem with regard to discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation in Kazakhstan

This publication was prepared and produced with the support from the Law Reform Program of Soros Foundation Kazakhstan as part of its work to fight discrimination and foster tolerance society.
