Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan Statement on the release of Yevgeny Zhovtis

Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan welcomes the adoption of the Law “On Amnesty Dedicated to the Twentieth Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and the subsequent decision by the city court number 2 of Ust-Kamenogorsk to release Yevgeniy Zhovtis.

The expected release of the prominent human rights activist will become a long-awaited event for the civil society in Kazakhstan as well as for the international community.

At the same time, this act of humanity of the government does not remove the question of uniform and fair justice for all people who found themselves in a similar situation.

Facts of injustice and selectiveness in application of laws undermine trust among the society in the law enforcement and court systems of Kazakhstan.

Based on the principle of equality stated in the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan calls for transparency, impartiality and fairness of the court system in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
