Statement of the Soros Foundation Kazakhstan with regard to the election of Kazakhstan a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council

Soros Foundation Kazakhstan welcomes election of Kazakhstan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018. This decision comes as a deserved recognition of our country’s contribution to the development of a positive agenda in international relations, both at the global and regional levels.

As our country will be representing the Asian-Pacific region during this term, we call upon the government of Kazakhstan to use this opportunity to defend and promote human rights and freedoms in Asia.

To do so Kazakhstan should show an example of full respect for human rights. A positive step in that direction will be fulfillment of recommendations made during the recent Periodic Review of the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights at the UN Committee on Human Rights.

Soros Foundation Kazakhstan firmly believes in the importance and interconnectedness of all three pillars of the United Nations system, which are peace and security, development and human rights.
